5 Reasons to Buy a Used RV

Buying a used RV is a great decision if you want to dip your toes into the RV lifestyle without breaking the bank.

Or maybe you are a veteran RV owner who is on the hook for large monthly payments. You want to take a step down and add more money to your travel fund and pay less to the bank.

Used or New RV - Used is Less Expensive, Potentially Better for Part-time Travel

Either way, buying a used RV is a great way to get more for less, which is the top reason you'll benefit from buying used.

1. Lower Price

Naturally, the number one reason for buying a used RV is that you’ll pay much less money up front. You can expect to save anywhere from $5,000 up to $10,000 or more, depending on the RV’s age.

2. Four Months a Year - Less is Sometimes More

This reason may not apply if you are a full-time RV user or you live in a place like Arizona. But let’s say you live in a colder climate -- like Iowa or Minnesota -- and only take your RV out during the warm months. You’d be paying for 12 months of RV use a year while only getting 3 or 4 months of use. Buying a used RV outright is easier to justify than paying during winter months for something you aren’t using. Financing is typically your only option if you’re buying a new RV, which brings us to our next point.

3. Straight Cash

used RV presents an opportunity most people won’t find if they are buying a new RV. Now, how much cash you can pay all depends on your budget, but you can definitely find used RVs under $10,000. That’s a price point that allows some people to dive straight into ownership instead of financing, which can appeal especially to part-time users.

4. Adventurers Might Want to Find a Used RV for Sale

Some vacationers like to play it safe and others are more adventurous. If you plan on taking paved roads everywhere, aren’t a big partier and want to invest longterm in a vehicle you’ll keep meticulously clean, a new RV is a perfect choice. On the other hand, if you are tempted by the road less traveled - often less paved - your decision on whether to buy a new or used RV might lead you to an RV that has been traveled in.

Gravel or service roads can take a toll on your RV, and you’ll feel more comfortable letting it take a few dings if you didn’t pay as much for it. Also, if you are a big music festival fan who camps near large groups of people who are drinking, a brand new RV may not be the best for you, either. More accidents tend to happen at the party scene. Plus, you don’t want your new RV carpet to be stained with beer or wine.

5. You Still Own Your House

Depending on your income, a mortgage payment and a high monthly RV payment can be too much to handle. It’s a little easier to buy a new RV if it’s also your full-time home. If you are a part-time RVer, used might be the way to go.
